“Training on the use of Drones for Agriculture monitoring”

Background of the project

Seed multiplication project aims at addressing the accessibility, availability and affordability of the quality seeds for the smallholder farmers of Chinaksen and Tuliguled Woreda. To ensure the efficient and effective implementation of the project total 20 cooperatives (11 cooperatives in Tuliguled and 9 cooperatives in Chinaksen) have been engaged in the seed production of Maize, Sorghum and Wheat.

To build the capacity of the selected cooperatives on seed production, ICRC is closely working with Haramaya University (HU) on Oromia side and Somali Seed Enterprise (SSE) on Somali side as a technical partner. The role of these technical partners is to ensure the different steps involved in seed production are known and followed by the seed cooperatives through the training and engagement in day-to-day activity. The technical partners are also responsible for providing Basic seeds of Maize, Sorghum, and Wheat seeds to the cooperatives.

Monitoring is key in seed multiplication project to ensure the quality and quantity of the seeds. Hence, ICRC decided to use remote sensing technique for crop monitoring in addition to ground proofing conducted by staffs and technical partners. ICRC is also exploring the possibility of introducing drones in crop monitoring as part of the project. Drone-based remote sensing systems have taken remote sensing one step further, as drones offer the possibilities to acquire high-quality data in an easy, fast and costeffective way. In 2019, EcoSec Unit piloted the use of drones in DRC and Mozambique in an agricultural program. Drones were mainly used for training purposes and demonstration of the potential of drone use in agriculture (Mozambique), to map plots of land, and to collect data to support the monitoring of the seeds multiplication farms (DR Congo). From previous experience in Mozambique, it is known that very precise and high-resolution images can be obtained with the use of drones, and this will enable the monitoring of the germination rate and plant density, as well as the early identification of potential threats such as water stress, nutrient deficiencies, or pest attacks. Such information is crucial to forecast yield.

Therefore, use of drone in monitoring of the seed producing cooperatives in Ethiopia (Tuliguled and Chinaksen) would add value throughout the agricultural season, from germination to harvesting by leveraging data to enable early warnings on potential threats that could allow to act ahead of the harvest season and therefore minimise different risks.

Purpose and methodology of Drone use in Ethiopia;

In the framework of its technical partnership to support seed multiplication project, the ICRC has decided to donate a Drone to Haramaya University upon receiving an expression of interest for drone technology to monitor agricultural crops. Haramaya University (HU) has assured ICRC to obtain all the necessary approval from the concern ministries for the use of drone in Agriculture. ICRC will provide a complete package of drone which includes Drone, Software, License, Monitor, Training requirement, and other necessary equipment to the HU. The key responsible staffs for drone from HU will be trained on drone flying, image processing and information extraction. HU will provide drone services to the ICRC, whenever required.

For ICRC, the main purpose of the Drone use in Ethiopia is to overall monitor the seed multiplication project throughout cropping season in ICRC priority areas. Upon success, the drones will be used to monitor other agricultural program supported by ICRC, especially for post distribution Monitoring and postharvest assessment. The specific objectives are as follows;

  •  To Support Efficient crop monitoring during the crop cycle, Drone will be flown as many times as possible at different crop growth stages to capture key elements and help early decision on issues such as: (1) on field failed germination (partial or total failed agricultural season and prepare for emergency and/or additional support), (2) provide better idea on early growth, crop performance and Pre-harvest monitoring to anticipate on Yield and food production, (3) Pest infestation issues and Land usage in targeted area.
  • To support the ongoing effort to develop a develop Yield prediction model in Ethiopia and that can serve for other similar ICRC working contexts in Africa
  • To compare the usefulness and performance of drone-based and sat-based remote sensing technologies, in collaboration with ICRC GIS team

Objective of the Training 

The main objective of this training is to enhance the knowledge and capacity to use of Drones for Agriculture monitoring.

The training will have 4 main components including:

  • Drones presentation and description (Hardware): Fixing the wings + camera + minimum maintenance required.
  • Software part where participants will learn about the procedure to prepare for flying the drone
  • using E-Motion software (provided by Ebee)
  •  Flying in real field to practice
  •  Data (imagery) processing with Pix4D (provided by Ebee)

Expected Outputs

The expected outcome of the training program is as follows;

  •  Distinguish between different types of drones and their best uses
  •  Use of different flying Apps
  • Carry out a simple flight using either the eBee or another model of drone (DJI Mavica 2 Pro)
  • Generate Ortho mosaics in the visible and Near Infra-Red (NIR) wave lengths.
  •  Generate a Digital Elevation Model from which plant eight can be extracted
  • Classify the images to extract meaningful land cover classes
  • Extract individual plants from the images, using OBIA methods
  •  Extract patterns of soil erosion with a combination of visual image analyses and automatic image analyses
  • Collect and use Ground Control Points


Total participants will be15 pax including ICRC and non-ICRC staff and training should be organized at beginning of November. Venues will be Haramaya University campus. Logistics arrangements such as venue, refreshment and invitation of participants will be done by ICRC while trainer should provide course presentations, including printing of handouts.
