About the Keeping Food Markets Working (KFMW)

In response to the global pandemic. GAIN has developed a program of targeted support to help sustain core food systems, workers, and markets during the COVID-19 emergency. GAIN Ethiopia under its Keeping Food Markets Working (KFMW) project has three priority areas for planned interventions plus cross-cutting research:

  1. Assess and identify urgent risks and opportunities to improve the market through rapid consumer and vendor communication exchange
  2. To Mitigate short-term health safety risks in prioritized informal food markets in Addis Ababa, informed by the vendor, consumer, and stakeholder insights into risks and opportunities.
  3. Leverage informal food markets to become safer and resilient by introducing human-centered market setup designs
  4. Build capacity of market governance authorities, subject matter experts, and key stakeholders to develop locally adapted guidance and actions for safe, resilient markets over the medium to longer-term

Request for Proposal for Market Infrastructure and people

Flow Assessment

GAIN seeks to hire a consultant to

  • a) assess the current physical layout and infrastructure of two selected markets in Addis Ababa;
  • b) assess how consumers and vendors interact and use the current infrastructure, and
  • c) provide recommendations for improvements or additions to the market’s infrastructure to improve the flow of people, safety of food and health of consumers and vendors under COVID19.

General Expected deliverables

The consultant will review existing assessment materials and develop an updated market assessment that can be used for informal markets. The consultant will determine the adequacy of the content of the existing materials and where insufficiency exists, the consultant will work to add content as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of design and feasibility studies of markets or similar infrastructures in Ethiopia, particularly Addis Ababa.
  • Thorough knowledge of Ethiopia building/ and market regulations and legislation,
  • Proof that the company is legally registered.


  • More than 10 (ten) years of proven working experience either in an Architectural/ Engineering or relevant field;
  • Demonstrable previous experience conducting infrastructural assessment/audit, experience in mechanical or civil engineering practice will be an added advantage or essential.
  • Practical knowledge of the setup of informal food markets in Addis Ababa is an asset.
  • Proven experience in working with International Organizations in Ethiopia.
  • Proven experience in preparing project progress reports in similar works.
